The origins of the place where the center is located is reminiscent of the Carmelite era, since this is where part of the Convento del Carmen once stood.
In 1887 the Palacio Municipal was built here, work of the architect Luis G. Anzorena. There is a prominent clock that still tells the time. In 1952, the palace was refurbished and it became the headquarters for the Álvaro Obregon delegation. After more than three decades, the property was turned into the current cultural center, which is the space for diverse artistic expressions: classical and regional dance workshops, ballroom dancing, painting exhibitions, concerts and theatre productions.
Ever since 1988, this place has been winning over local people and artists who have found a forum for expression here. Inside is the López Tarso theater, which boasts an Italian-style stage and has 400-person capacity.
