Explore the mines’ depths to discover a part of Guanajuato’s history.
Can you imagine submerging yourself beneath the ground and discovering a parallel world? This is what you can experience in the La Valenciana Mine, in the north of Guanajuato, an obligatory stop for those who want to know more about the city’s history.
Operated by the Spanish, this was Mexico’s most important silver mine during the colonial era and one of the most productive in the whole world. It was thanks to this mine that majestic churches and mansions were built in the outskirts of the city, many of which you can still visit.
Today, Guanajuato’s mines are UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Descend into their depths and discover them, with the guidance of genuine ex-miners. Admire the historic objects and the figure of the Virgin Mary carved into the walls. And before you go, don’t forget to buy a mineral rock as a souvenir!
