In 1940, the Márquez Figueroa brothers, teachers at the then Academia de Bellas Artes (Fine Arts Academy), arrived at El Parián to give their outdoor painting class. After a few hours, one of them interrupted the session to propose the idea of turning the neighborhood into a space for artists to meet and share ideas. That was when the idea for the Barrio del Artista was born.
Today, it’s an attractive cobblestone spot where you can see painters work among a row of small galleries. If you like art collections, check out Casa del Deán and see its interesting mural painting with elements of Greek mythology. Don’t forget the Callejón de los Sapos, a pedestrian mall for shopping for antiques, handicrafts, and very original items.
