Take Home a Handicraft
The fishing tradition is also evident in what their hands weave; the barcina is its emblematic handicraft, a container made with dried prawns. They place two pounds of dried prawns inside a cloth bag, giving it a spherical shape by using some string, until it becomes a compact sphere; it is then covered with dried palm leaves so as to avoid any filtration of moisture into the prawns; right away the artistic weaving of string begins, which ensures that once the barcina is finished it can be easily manipulated. Other emblematic pieces include water lily and mangrove weaves. Around the edges of the town’s circular road you will see vases, lamps, lanterns, tortilla baskets, fans, bags and hats.
