Camp on a Chinampa in Parque Ecoturístico Chinampero Michmani

Activities in Chinampero Michmani ecotourism park include camping on chinampas—the floating gardens built by the Aztecs—kayaking, and traditional temescal saunas.

Over ten years ago, the people of Michmani, who traditionally earned their living by fishing, needed to find a new way of life after fishing was banned in the canal zone. Six groups of fishermen got together and created this ecotourism project to offer activities to the inhabitants of Mexico City.

If you are interested in getting out into nature, head to the dock in Cuemanco. Then choose your own adventure: take off on a rowboat, kayak, fish, or camp out on a chinampa.

Four different variations of temescal saunas are available: water, fire, wind, and earth. The shaman promises to relieve anxiety, high blood pressure, and stress.

Touring the area lets you truly appreciate the chinampa agricultural system. These islands produce vegetables and more than one hundred medicinal plants. They are also home to a variety of willow trees whose roots capture soil and organic material, anchoring the woven structure that holds the chinampas. Moreover, these trees stabilize Mexico City’s weather. Without them, temperatures would rise and there would be less water. The park also works to save axolotls.
