Guided by the slogan “have fun protecting wildlife,” Akumal Monkey Sanctuary was designed to provide refuge, attention, and care to the iconic spider monkeys, Madagascar lemurs, capuchin monkeys, and many more species.
This refuge in Akumal, Quintana Roo, is part of the natural setting and also recreates other environments to give the animals the chance to live safely and more freely.

Monkey Sanctuary Tour

Monkey Sanctuary + Cenote Ma’ax
Experience a complete tour of the Santuario de los Monos (Monkey Refuge), learn about its inhabitants, and interact with several of the animals. Then, take a second tour along an underground river called Cenote Ma’ax, filled with stalactites and stalagmites.

You must be 16 years old or older and have a valid driver’s license. Passengers must be at least 5 years old. The excursion lasts 2 hours.
Akumal Monkey Sanctuary: Half Monkey Sanctuary + ATV & Cenote Excursion
Enjoy a half-day excursion in the rainforest. The tour includes visits to the monkey and rescued animal sanctuary in Akumal. Then, you will grab the handlebars of your own ATV to follow expert guides on this incredible all-terrain excursion. Visit, swim in, and enjoy the Cenote Río Sagrado (Sacred River Cenote), in an underground cave brimming with prehistoric stalactites and stalagmites.

General Tips for Visiting Akumal Monkey Sanctuary
- Wear comfortable clothing (long-sleeved shirt).
- Use biodegradable insect repellent.
- Wear biodegradable sunscreen.
- Bring a swimsuit and towel.
- You will need water shoes.
- No one who is inebriated or under the influence of alcohol or drugs will be allowed to enter. If a visitor is found to be incapacitated in any way, the tour will be cancelled without refund.
Important Information
- Your entrance fee helps protect the refuge’s animals and rescue more species.
- The basic experience lasts about two hours.
- Reservations are necessary for visits. The refuge has the following times available: 9:00 AM, 10:00 AM, 12:00 PM, 1:00 PM, and 3:00 PM. You must arrive 20 minutes before your tour.
- Plus, you can swim in Cenote Ma’ax pool for an extra fee.
- The basic entrance fee is $70 dollars for adults and $50 dollars for children. Kids younger than 5 years old are free.
- You must show an official ID when entering.
- There is special pricing for local residents.
