Start your explorations in Plaza Grande, a pleasant square bordered by the Palacio de Gobierno which displays paintings about Yucatan’s history. This is also home to Catedral de San Idelfonso, the first cathedral in Latin America (construction started in 1561). Other notable stops are Casa de Francisco de Montejo, house of the city’s founder, considered a valuable masterpiece of the Plateresque art, and Pasaje Pichetas, a former prison that now holds restaurants, handicraft shops, and cafés.
