The Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve is one of Mexico’s most captivating natural treasures, sprawling across over 650,000 hectares and encompassing pristine beaches and breathtaking landscapes. Immerse yourself in the regional flora and fauna, navigating through jungles, dunes, and wetlands.Pumas, ocelots, spider monkeys, jaguars, dolphins, manatees, howler monkeys, sea turtles, and over 300 species of resident and migratory birds have all found a home in this paradise.

Located 87 miles from Cancún and 6 miles south of Tulum, this place is a sanctuary for over 1,400 plant species. This broad territory features high, medium, and low altitude jungles, coastal dunes, wetlands, savannas, palm groves, and reed beds. 

Along its sparsely explored shores lies a portion of the Great Mayan Reef, home to hundreds of species of colorful fish. Dive into this underwater world to see sponges, pink conches, starfish, sea urchins, and spiny lobsters, among many other marine wonders.

The Chunyaxché Channel provides a waterway entrance to the Sian Ka’an Reserve. A boat journey through its winding channels, weaving through mangroves, reveals hundreds of birds, Mayan ruins surrounded by water, marshy lands, coastal lagoons, tall grasses, and unique petenes. 

Sian Ka’an boasts an underground network of freshwater rivers connecting cenotes and petenes, a unique feature of the Yucatán Peninsula and in the world—a true natural capital of the reserve.

How to Get to Sian Ka’an

From Cancún, take the federal highway 307 southward until you reach Tulum. Follow the signs from there to the reserve. Buses from the Cancún bus station also offer transportation to get there.
