San Francisco de Asís Church

Parroquia de San Francisco de Asis

On Independence Square’s Central Garden is this church dedicated to Saint Francis of Assisi. The building, for which ground was broken in 1880, still retains its 16th-century tower. Its bell tower is built with limestone, while the rest of the church shows the Franciscans’ typical architectural restraint. It also shelters sculptures from the 17th century. Every October, a festival is held to honor its patron saint, including dances featuring traditional conchero and moro dancers, masquerades, fireworks, and a big celebration in the central garden.
