Laguna Nichupté ’s Importance and Beauty
This large lagoon lies in the heart of Cancun, showcasing four species of mangrove trees, crocodiles, iguanas, leopard frogs, and a diverse range of birds. Since 2008, Flora, Fauna y Cultura de México AC, in collaboration with the Comisión Nacional de Áreas Naturales Protegidas (National Commission of Protected Natural Areas) and the Centro de Investigación y de Estudios Avanzados del Instituto Politécnico Nacional (National Polytechnic Institute’s Center for Research and Advanced Studies) in Mérida (Cinvestav) have been actively involved in a successful project reforestating and protecting of Nichupté’s mangroves.
They aim to preserve and restore this precious ecosystem. Laguna Nichupté consists of seven lakes: Cuenca del Norte, Cuenca Central, Cuenca del Sur, Laguna Bojórquez, Río Inglés, Laguneta del Mediterráneo, and Laguna del Amor, the latter named for its heart shape.
Covering over 3,000 hectares, this lagoon system is an important natural reserve. These lagoons connect to the Caribbean through two channels, Sigfrido and Nizuc, resulting in a combination of both fresh and saltwater.
