Located to the east of Villahermosa, this is one of the state capital’s most important touristic centers, known as the Centro de Interpretación y Convivencia con la Naturaleza (Center for Interpretation and Co-existence with Nature). Yumká, which means “spirit that guards the rainforest and animals”, has around 7 square miles of territory dedicated to environmental conservation and education.
It was established as an “ecological monument” on the 19th of December, 1987, and later as a natural protected area on the 5th of June, 1993. Currently it is a zoo where visitors can see animal species from all around the world.
