Traditional Commemoration of the End of the War for Mexico’s Independence

The memory of that morning on September 16, 1810 and the triumphal entrance of the Trigarante Army to the city is still a reason for celebration in Tonatico, over a century later. September 26 and 27, the town buzzes with festivities. There are dances, bull rides—called jaripeos—and a parade complete with floats. On the afternoon of the 27th, some of the main battles of Mexico’s Independence are reenacted before giving way to all-out merriment.
