Gypsum Dunes, Coahuila’s Stunning Natural Landscape
Get ready to see one of our country’s most amazing natural landscapes. When you see the dunes in person, you will want to feel them under your bare feet.
When you reach this natural attraction in Cuatro Ciénegas, Coahuila, you won’t be able to believe your eyes. You will immediately want to kick off your shoes and walk through the 2,000 acres of sand barefoot.
The Gypsum Dunes are dazzling as the sun’s rays glint off the ground here. Combined with the blue sky, they make for an incredible, surreal, and chill scene. In addition, when the wind blows hard, it creates new dunes, transforming the landscape. So, if you visit again, it will be as if you are somewhere you have never been before.
The sand is made of calcium sulfate, which geologists call white gypsum. It is glossy and soft. Plus, this material is mixed with silicon, giving it an even smoother texture.
For decades, this spot was just used as a gypsum deposit. Thousands of tons of white soil were taken out of here without any awareness of just how extraordinary the area is.
Reportedly, there are only three other regions with similar white dunes on the planet—in New Mexico, Texas, and Tunisia. Today, the area is only used for tourism, and visitors enjoy running over the dunes, relaxing in them, and sliding down their white slopes.
