In this wonderful city, different ethnicities and cultures fuse together, giving life to unique traditions, handicrafts, and flavors.

Founded in the 16th century, its buildings are grandiose examples of Novo-Hispanic Baroque: churches and chapels are dotted everywhere, most of them erected in green cantera (Mexican volcanic rock), with the Templo de Santo Domingo de Guzmán being perhaps the proudest demonstration of this architecture.

These days Oaxaca is also a cosmopolitan city, with restaurants of high Mexican cuisine, mezcal bars, and boutiques of exquisite popular art (from alebrijes–brightly colored folk art sculptures of animals and fantastical creatures–to weavings and black clay ceramics). What’s more, nearby there are mysterious archeological sites, such as Monte Albán and Mitla, the natural marvel of rock formations called Hierve el Agua, and villages with tremendous artisanal tradition such as Etla, San Bartolo Coyotepec–famous for its black clay–and Teotitlán del Valle, where rugs of incredible quality are woven.
