Things to do

Take a 4×4 trip through the Sierra Cucapá hills and escape to the salt flats of the Laguna Salada

To the southeast of Mexicali are two unmissable sites: The Sierra de Cucapá hills and the Laguna Salada salt flats. The first runs along the road to San Felipe and is home to bighorn sheep and the olneya or ironwood flowering tree, among other desert plants. One of the best ways to discover the area is aboard a 4×4.

The Laguna Salada, once fed by the Colorado river and the Sea of Cortez, is now an arid salt flat which has become the site for off-road races, marathons and cycling. From an ultralight flight, the landscape is a desolate, never ending plain, overlooked by the imposing Sierrá Cucapá and Sierra de Juárez mountains.

We highly recommend visiting both places in a 4×4 with a guide. You can do this from Rancho Baja Cucapah
