Observe the Plant and Animal Life in the Parque Nacional Desierto de los Leones

This was the first ecological reserve on the western side of the city. This is still a favorite escape for those seeking to spend time in nature.

Surrounded by oyamel, ash and evergreen oak trees, in a semi-humid climate, this national park is a refuge for mammals, reptiles, amphibians, birds and at least a hundred species of mushroom. Its over 4,600 acres are divided between a deer reserve, waterfalls and streams, trails and hills that allow for the observation of birds, hiking, mountain bike rides and horseback rides; there are also playpark areas and picnic zones with designated fire pits.

Look out for the occasional hermitage that might appear along the way, as well as the ex-convent and its underground tunnels, gardens, event and exhibition spaces and the restaurant serving Mexican dishes.
