Stroll Plaza de Armas

A plaque here reads: “This city was founded under the name San Francisco de Cuéllar on October 12, 1709.” Plaza de Armas (Main Square) invites you to stroll and enjoy its peaceful atmosphere. In the afternoon, people-watch and spend time with locals. The square is a favorite place to spend the evening.

The Plaza spreads out across from the Palacio de Gobierno and Catedral Metropolitana. It is anchored by the Monumento a los Héroes de la Independencia, and the four corners hold statues that represent the most important economic activities of the 19th century: work, trade, agriculture, and mining.

The sculptures and gazebo are works of French wrought iron, as well as the four statues that line Plaza Hidalgo.
