Calderitas: A Charming Escape in Quintana Roo

Explore Calderitas and the surrounding tourist zone for an experience filled with ecotourism, culture, adventure, and rural life.

Calderitas

Calderitas stands just 5 miles from the city of Chetumal, within the protected zone of the Manatee Sanctuary (1996). It is a vital part of a tourist zone made up of two communities—Laguna Guerrero and Raudales—in the municipality of Othón P. Blanco in Quintana Roo. This area boasts natural and cultural attractions. The hot springs, archeological sites, gastronomic zone, and diverse plants and wildlife in its surroundings offer the perfect blend of adventure and relaxation against a stunning natural backdrop.

Remnants of the Past

Originally called Yaaxcanab, meaning “place of green water” in Mayan language, the town is now known as Calderitas for the small clay cauldrons discovered by its first settlers. The region is historically significant and is home to Oxtankah archaeological site, the largest Maya city unearthed near Chetumal Bay.

Culinary Delights

A fishing community, Calderitas is renowned for its unique cuisine. Along the bay, almost a mile of palapa-covered restaurants line the shore. Indulge in a wide variety of dishes featuring fish, octopus, shrimp, lobster, and snails. Don’t miss your chance to savor fish in Pil Pil sauce.
