This late 18th-century building functioned as a prison. In the middle of the night on the 16th of September, 1810, after giving the Shout of Independence in front of the Parroquia de los Dolores, Don Miguel Hidalgo visited the prison and freed its inmates, inviting them to join the fight for independence.
The Museum of National Independence is a late 18th-century building whose cells have now been converted into halls where objects, artistic pieces and historic documents are exhibited, offering a glimpse into the era. If you wish to know more about this episode that marked the course of the country’s history, you must come and visit.
