About 50 kilometers from San Francisco de Campeche, the archaeological site of Edzna reveals one of the most remarkable urban centers of the Maya world. Its name is often translated as “House of the Itza,” and for centuries the city held regional influence thanks to an advanced hydraulic system that allowed water to be stored and distributed in an area with irregular rainfall.

The site stands out for the scale of its architecture. The Temple of the Five Stories, a stepped pyramid overlooking the Great Acropolis, rises above wide ceremonial plazas that reveal the carefully planned layout of the ancient city. As visitors walk through the complex, palaces, temples, and platforms illustrate the engineering and social organization achieved by this civilization.

Edzna offers a different experience from more crowded archaeological destinations. The landscape remains quiet, surrounded by low forest and tropical vegetation. Walking among its structures makes it possible to imagine life in a city that reached its peak between the sixth and tenth centuries, when it functioned as one of the region’s most significant political and ceremonial centers.
