Holy Week

Semana Santa, or Holy Week, is a display of faith, to remember Christ’s crucifixion.

In Xalapa, the celebration takes place in the Xallitic neighborhood, where there is a theatrical performance which allows those who attend the event to relive what happened on that day. Xalapa locals walk several miles within the city in total silence and with lit candles, carrying the Santo Entierro: a figure of Christ lying down beneath the cross, made from solid wood that weighs 330 pounds. Also, on Holy Saturday seven churches are visited.
