Sun City
In northwestern Mexico, Hermosillo introduces travelers to the landscapes and traditions of the Sonoran Desert while remaining connected to the Sea of Cortez. The region moves between two environments: arid plains filled with towering sahuaro cacti and a coastline shaped by fishing communities and marine life. The experience unfolds through desert scenery, regional cuisine centered on grilled beef and seafood, and nearby coastal escapes where the desert gradually gives way to the gulf.
The Signature Experience
Cerro de la Campana is Hermosillo’s most recognizable natural viewpoint. From the summit, visitors can see the city stretching across the valley while the desert landscape surrounds the horizon. Climbing the hill near sunset is a popular ritual among residents and visitors. As daylight fades, the city lights gradually appear across the urban landscape.
Located in the Sonoran Desert outside Hermosillo, La Pintada is one of the most significant rock art sites in northern Mexico. More than a thousand ancient paintings appear on canyon walls, created by desert communities centuries ago. The images depict animals, hunting scenes, symbols, and ritual figures that reflect the relationship between early inhabitants and the surrounding environment.
Plaza Zaragoza serves as the historic and social center of Hermosillo. Surrounded by gardens and shaded benches, the plaza has long been a gathering place for residents. Facing the square stands the Metropolitan Cathedral, one of the city’s most recognizable architectural landmarks. During the day the plaza offers a quiet place to walk or rest, while evenings bring families, musicians, and visitors into the space.
The Centro Ecologico de Sonora is one of the most important environmental conservation spaces in northwestern Mexico. The park focuses on the ecosystems of the Sonoran Desert and northern Mexico. Through walking trails and educational exhibits, visitors can observe species such as mule deer, desert reptiles, birds of prey, and other native animals. More than a traditional zoo, the center functions as a space for environmental education that highlights the biodiversity of the Sonoran Desert and the importance of protecting its ecosystems.
