Los Mochis

Palms, railway heritage, and the freshest flavors of land and sea

Why to Visit?

Los Mochis stands out for its balance between urban life and nearby natural landscapes. Broad, tree-lined avenues and an orderly city layout reflect a relatively young city designed with openness and green spaces in mind. Just beyond the city lies the bay of Topolobampo, where mangroves, marine wildlife, and wide Pacific horizons shape the coastal scenery. The city is also the starting point for one of Mexico’s most remarkable rail journeys: the Chepe train route to Copper Canyon. Fresh seafood, coastal sunsets, and the promise of the Sierra Tarahumara make Los Mochis a lively place to begin the journey north.

In northern Sinaloa, between fertile agricultural valleys and the Pacific coast, lies Los Mochis—a city that blends modern planning, regional traditions, and access to diverse natural landscapes.

Unlike many historic cities in Mexico, Los Mochis developed during the early 20th century as part of an agricultural and urban planning project. Its structured layout, wide avenues, and green public spaces earned it the nickname “the garden city,” a characteristic that still defines its open and relaxed atmosphere.

The city’s location plays a key role in its identity. Just a short drive away is the port of Topolobampo, a calm bay surrounded by mangroves, islands, and coastal ecosystems where dolphins are frequently spotted. Boat excursions explore natural channels and quiet beaches along the Pacific coast of Sinaloa.

Los Mochis is also known as the starting point of the Chihuahua al Pacifico Railway—better known as the Chepe. This rail route climbs from the coastal plains into the Sierra Madre Occidental and eventually reaches the dramatic landscapes of Copper Canyon, a system of canyons deeper and larger in area than Arizona’s Grand Canyon.

Food is another essential part of life in Los Mochis. Markets and local restaurants highlight the region’s seafood traditions, offering shrimp, scallops, crab, and fish prepared with flavors typical of the Pacific coast.

Between sea, mountains, and city life, Los Mochis offers a dynamic introduction to northwestern Mexico and serves as the gateway to one of the country’s most extraordinary landscapes.
