The Reserva de la Biosfera El Cielo, located in the state of Tamaulipas, encompasses the two most important large ecoregions in the Americas: the Neotropical and the Nearctic realms. The zone is inhabited by more than 255 species of resident birds and 175 migratory ones, plus reptiles, amphibians, bats, and many plants and animals from warm and temperate climates.
It covers more than 558 square miles that include part of the Sierra Madre Oriental mountains and portions of the territories of the Gómez Farías, Llera, Jaumave, and Ocampo municipalities.
