The region is known for its soups. Try Fonda Doña Mica’s potato and cheese version. If you would like to try authentic machaca—shredded dried beef—head to Restaurante Carolina on Plaza de la Constitución. Chili peppers with cheese, flour tortillas, and milk candy with nuts are also regional specialties. The area’s drinks include sotol (similar to tequila but made from another desert plant), lechuguilla (liquor made with several kinds of agave), and tesgüino or suguí (a corn-based drink that is sacred for the Tarahumara). All have distinctive flavors.
