The Ocean’s Brightest Minds

Dolphins (delphinidae), commonly known as marine dolphins, are a family of toothed cetaceans encompassing nearly 34 species.

Like other cetaceans, they use echolocation, dancing, and leaping to communicate and navigate.

At Dolphin Discovery, the dolphins are bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus). They live in groups of 12 animals called pods, forming enduring social units.

Some fascinating facts about dolphins:

  • They sleep with one eye closed and the other open.
  • They consume approximately 24 to 29 pounds of fish daily.
  • They can recognize themselves in a mirror or on TV.
  • They use echolocation to see the world around them.
  • They are known for their playful behavior and agility.
  • The structure of their flippers is akin to a human hand.
  • Dolphin skin lacks sweat glands and is odorless.
  • Their bodies are hydrodynamic, defined, and fusiform.
  • Dolphins are the most recognized marine animals around the world.
