La Chinesca and the Pagoda
- Phone number Call
Just steps away from the border line, you can find the gaudy Cantonese Quarter, known as La Chinesca. The zone exists thanks to the large group of Chinese migrants who came to the city in the 1920s seeking work. Despite being a minority group, here the Asian community is very visible in the quarter’s many businesses, especially the restaurants—a particularly wonderful gift from their culture. Here there was also a Pagoda, a gift from Mexicali’s sister city Nanjing. It was removed due to road works, but being the emblematic monument that it is, it now stands proudly on the Morelos roundabout in Mexicali’s Historic Center.
As well as delicious oriental cuisine, La Chinesca also offers visitors 14 beautiful murals depicting faces of people beloved by the Chinese community.
