Los Tuxtlas Biosphere Reserve
In the Los Tuxtlas region there are at least 565 bird species, 139 mammal species, 166 amphibian and reptile species, 109 fish species and 1,117 insect species.
An hour and a half from Tlacotalpan you will find this protected area of natural beauty, ideal for ecotourism and birdwatching. The Los Tuxtlas region is a socio-cultural mosaic in which ethnic local groups of different origins live side-by-side, practicing a combination of means of production, religious practices and traditions. Large human settlements of the Olmec people lived here, and then later on settlements of the Teotihuacan people. Their legacy is present both in the archeological vestiges as well as the agricultural production techniques they use. It is advisable to visit with a guide, and to sleep in the cabins within the reserve.
