Costa Occidental National Park

Scuba dive and snorkel in one of the world's largest reefs.

The park’s full name is Parque Nacional Costa Occidental de Isla Mujeres, Punta Cancún y Punta Nizuc (Isla Mujeres, Punta Cancún, and Punta Nizuc West Coast National Park), and it is part of the Great Mayan Reef, which in turn is a segment of the Mesoamerican Reef System, the world’s second-largest reef system

You can book a tour of this underwater reserve with a tour operator on Isla Mujeres.

What to do in Costa Occidental National Park

Established as a National Park in 1996, it’s an area of turquoise water where you can marvel at coral reefs and an underwater museum featuring colorful fish, mangroves, sea grasses, and coral. In other words, it’s the perfect spot for diving and snorkeling.

A rich array of biodiversity thrives here: algae, sponges, mollusks, crustaceans, echinoderms, along with dolphins, fish, and turtles. Various species of plants, birds, and crocodiles can also be spotted.

Apart from diving and snorkeling, activities such as kayaking, nature observation, boat trips, boat rides, and ziplining are available.

Tips for visiting the park
