Two Very Colorful Trips from Guadalajara

Thinking about what to do close to Guadalajara? One of Mexico Unknown Travel Experts suggests two options to sample Tequila, purchase handicrafts and enjoy the scenery without traveling too far.

1. Tequila, Jalisco

The famous spirit made from blue agave can be enjoyed anywhere in Jalisco, but any good Tequila-themed trip should really start from here! Named a Magical Town in 2003, Tequila is home to 22 distilleries, seven of which are open to the public. The town offers many shops, tavern-bars and great night life (which isn’t reserved to the evening hours!). All is surrounded by an astonishing landscape of agave fields, which were classed as an unesco World Heritage Site in 2006. The Hacienda El Centenario, belonging to the José Cuervo family, is a stylish location for special events, with guided tours, and home to more than 100 sculptures by the famous artist Leonora Carrington. What’s more, Tequila is one of only a few Mexican towns accessible by passenger train: Called the José Cuervo Express, it has an open bar! Cheers!

Location:

Tequila is one hour away from Guadalajara along the federal road number 15D, or two hours away by train.

2. Tlaquepaque and Tonalá, Jalisco

To the southwest of Guadalajara, you can discover two very traditional places: Tlaquepaque and Tonalá. Today, the towns practically merge into the city, but they retain their own unique charms. Here, as well as sampling the very best of Jalisco’s cuisine, you can also shop for beautiful handicrafts in the hundreds of stores and market stands. In the center of Tonalá, you will even have the opportunity to visit a few of the workshops, to see how the artisans use their skilled hands to work with materials such as clay, glass, leather, brass and even precious metals. If you like handicrafts, these two locations are obligatory stops on your journey through Jalisco.

Location:

Tonalá is 30 minutes away from the center of Guadalajara. Take Dr. Roberto Michel Ave to the interchange with the Guadalajara-Zapotlanejo highway and continue until the exit towards Tonalá.

Tlaquepaque can be found halfway along the same route: instead of taking the highway, take Niños Héroes Ave.
