Built between the 16th and 18th centuries, this property was constructed using resistant coralliferous stones extracted from the depths of the ocean. As well as protecting the Port of Veracruz from the constant pirate attacks, this fort functioned as a shopping center, military barracks, and even as a prison. The imposing structure of San Juan de Ulúa still conserves its original moat, ramp and five bulwarks, as well as a few dungeons in which a museum display has been installed.
