This is a Protected Natural Area, located on the remains of a volcano that was active around 30,000 years ago. Its name has pre-Hispanic roots: Macuiltépetl, which in Nahuatl means “fifth hill” or “hill number five”. It is Xalapa’s most elevated point, almost 5,250 feet above sea level. Venture all the way up to the viewpoint, and enjoy the city’s most impressive panoramic view. In the suburbs, visit the sundial, a pyramid-mausoleum in honor of Veracruz’s most distinguished residents and the museum called Museo de la Fauna, with its impressive variety of birds.
