Travel to this cave in Kantemó and try a nocturnal experience: check out fossils, marine life, Morelet’s crocodiles, and dangling snakes devouring their prey.

To experience the cave of the hanging snakes, you need to head to the border between Yucatán and Quintana Roo, 111.8 miles south of Mérida, on the edge of the municipality of Jesús María Morelos in Quintana Roo.

Tourist Options 

This is a community adventure tourism initiative, developed over the last 15 years by Bej Kax Ha, a social project. Beyond exploring the destination’s attractions with the help of local guides, you can explore green spaces in Chichankanab lagoon, enjoy the food provided, and stay in cabins or campgrounds.

Services

You can reserve meals (breakfast, lunch, and dinner) in a local family’s home, in a restaurant, or take them with you to the lagoon for your activities. Two-person cabins are available for rent (around $700 MXN pesos). Additional person: $150 MXN pesos. 

Cave of the Hanging Snakes, a Safe Walk on the Wild Side

The most astonishing spectacle is put on by nature, and you can see it for yourself by exploring a cave and seeing thousands of bats. Six species inhabit the cave, and they fly out to catch their food, such as wild fruit and insects. You can also spot the snakes peeking out from holes, waiting to catch and devour a tasty tidbit.

Recommendations for Visitors

  1. Wear biodegradable bug spray and sunscreen.
  2. Select comfortable, closed-toe shoes that can get wet, such as water shoes.
  3. Wear comfortable clothing with long sleeves and pants.
  4. If you have a good flashlight, you can take it along.
  5. If you are allergic to any insects, be careful and bring any necessary medications with you.
  6. No flash photography inside the cave.

How to Get There?

By car, you must reach the municipality of José María Morelos and take the Tihosuco-Valladolid detour; after 12.5 miles take the Dziuché-Tihosuco municipal road detour. Kantemó is located at kilometer 3.
