What Makes it Magical
Undoubtedly, the leading role played by the former Villa de San Felipe de Linares in shaping the northeastern part of Mexico makes it a can’t-miss destination. But more than its history, Linares is also architecture, colorful local traditions, hospitality, and intense flavors.
Why You Should Go
The Plaza de Armas’ Unique Architecture
- This square brings together emblematic buildings that have given Linares a special place in the history of northeast Mexico.
- On the eastern side stands the Catedral de San Felipe Apóstol–a blend of baroque and neoclassical architecture. It was the first episcopal seat in the Northeast.
- Beside it sits the fancy Palacio Municipal with its British air. It is one of the area’s most important structures from the Porfiriato era at the turn of the last century.
- On the other side is Casino de Linares, looking very European. The Paris Opera was its inspiration.
At the Very Least
See Botica Morelos, with an indigenous style, setting an odd architectural counterpoint.
Don’t Miss
- Savor slow-roasted beef barbacoa tacos, layered compuesta sandwiches, and sweet glorias.
- Wander around downtown, checking out the cathedral and Botica Morelos apothecary.
- Paddle a kayak around Presa Cerro Prieto reservoir.
