Riviera Maya

Luxury, jungle, cenotes, and Caribbean in a single corridor

Why to Visit

The Riviera Maya stretches along a section of the Caribbean where landscapes unfold in several directions at once: pale sand beaches, turquoise waters that shift color throughout the day, and tropical forest covering underground rivers and cenotes. Within the vegetation stand temples and ceremonial sites built by the ancient Maya. The region combines coastal scenery, archaeological heritage, and ecosystems shaped by both sea and jungle.

Extending across more than one hundred kilometers of Caribbean coastline, the Riviera Maya forms a corridor where natural landscapes and cultural history remain closely connected. From Puerto Morelos to Punta Allen, this region of Quintana Roo includes some of the most recognizable environments of Mexico’s Caribbean coast: white sand beaches, tropical forest, freshwater cenotes, and coral reefs that belong to the Mesoamerican Reef System, one of the largest reef structures in the world.

The region’s identity is strongly linked to the Maya civilization. Archaeological sites appear throughout the forest, reflecting centuries of astronomical knowledge, trade networks, and ceremonial life. Places such as Tulum, positioned on cliffs above the Caribbean Sea, and Coba, whose pyramid rises above the surrounding jungle, illustrate the scale and complexity of Maya culture, which continues to influence local communities, traditions, and cuisine.

The Riviera Maya also offers a wide range of travel experiences. In the center of the region, Playa del Carmen retains traces of its past as a fishing village while also hosting galleries, restaurants, and cafés that attract travelers from around the world. Farther south, protected reserves and biosphere areas preserve mangroves, lagoons, and coral reefs inhabited by sea turtles, tropical fish, and migratory birds.

Tourism in the Riviera Maya combines coastal hospitality with access to nature and culture. Oceanfront resorts, boutique hotels set within the forest, ecological parks, and community-led experiences offer different ways to explore the region—whether through outdoor adventure, cultural exploration, wellness, or time by the sea.
