Holbox is a small Mexican island tucked at the very north of the state of Quintana Roo. It is connected to the Yucatán Peninsula by a sandbar, sharing the ocean and Yalahau lagoon.
Isla Holbox in the state of Quintana Roo is actually made up of two islands separated by a channel of water. They measure 24.8 miles long and 1.2 miles wide, plus 21.1 miles of beach stretching to the north.

Ocean Activities Lie at the Heart of It All
When you visit the island, the first thing you should do is go snorkeling. Discover the gorgeous coast, home to around 60 species of coral and hundreds of multicolored fish.
Holbox is part of Área Natural Protegida Yum Balam nature reserve, where canals connecting it to the lagoon weave through a large mangrove forest. This makes it also the perfect spot to go kayaking.
If you are an adrenaline junkie, don’t miss your chance to kitesurf (kiteboard) through the air. Enjoy the air currents that are present almost year-round in Holbox.
This is your chance to swim and snorkel with the imposing but gentle whale shark. They visit the Caribbean coast during the months of July and August.
