Sanctuary of Our Lady of Tonatico
Santuario de Nuestra Señora de TonaticoThis gem of neoclassical architecture dating from the 17th century crowns the main square and is one of the most beautiful buildings in Estado de México. Inside, the sanctuary boasts gold-plated altarpieces. The altar venerates the Virgin Mary with a tally of miracles granted equal to the number of people who have come to ask for them. Devotees of the Virgin can get a close-up look thanks to the staircase that raises them up to meet her at a height of 33 feet. From 1600 to the present, a chapel with votive offerings has given evidence of the people’s enormous faith. Those entering to witness these miracles will find nearly 1,000 altarpieces in which the Virgin has intervened.
While you’re here, be sure to check out the atrium, the outdoor theater, the church with its three chapels, and the area of votive offerings.
