El Pípila Monument
Monumento al PípilaThis popular monument-viewpoint was built in 1939 to honor Juan José de los Reyes Martínez, better known as El Pípila, the famously brave hero of Mexican Independence who participated in the capture of the Alhóndiga de Granaditas (Guanajuato’s historic granary).
The statue, made of pink quarry stone, is located at the top of a hill, which is why it is the ideal place for a panoramic view of the city, day or night. Behind it you will find an entrance through which you can access, for an extra cost, the upper part of the monument for an even better view.
You can reach the El Pípila monument by following a path of narrow roads and stairways, or by public transport. However, if you are looking for a different experience and you aren’t afraid of heights, we suggest you travel by cable car (the journey is only a couple of minutes long, perfect for taking spectacular photos).
