In Guanajuato, churches are best discovered slowly, not hurried through. This is especially true if they shelter priceless historic treasures, such as one of the city’s most important churches, the Jesuit church called Templo de la Compañía de Jesús.
Built in the 18th century, this church features a beautiful pink limestone baroque-style facade and a neoclassical dome dating from the 19th century. Inside, it holds a vast collection of religious art. Some of the works hang on the walls of the naves and others are housed in a picture gallery at the back. Look for the portraits painted by Miguel Cabrera, the acclaimed Oaxacan artist from the mid-18th century.
