The building itself is worthy of admiration. It was built in 1796, and its neoclassical facade reflects Guanajuato’s prosperity towards the end of the 18th century.

The Alhóndiga is a true icon of this city, it was one of the principal settings of Mexican Independence. Faced with an imminent attack from the rebels led by Don Miguel Hidalgo, it served as a refuge for those defending the Viceroyalty regime.

From 1958 to this day it has been the home of the Guanajuato Regional Museum. It houses a vast collection of art pieces, the state’s handicrafts, pre-Hispanic pieces and a hall dedicated to the history of the state and the country.
