Campeche Cathedral
Catedral de Nuestra Señora de la Purísima ConcepciónExactly 500 years later, it is clear that the passing of time has done nothing except add to the beauty of what was, in its beginning, a simple plaza framed by the government palace and a church with a palm-leaf roof church. Today, Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception Cathedral cuts an impressive figure with its two towers and its light stone facade, finished in 1760 in a baroque style which, in sections, borders on the neo-classical.
Cut against the blue sky, and in the middle of a plaza splashed with color in every direction, the cathedral is pure white. As night falls, the architectural lighting that decorates it emphasizes details that the stark morning sun doesn’t allow our eyes to distinguish.
