This fort, the Baluarte de San Carlos, is located in the area where the wall protecting San Francisco de Campeche began to be built. Today, it holds an interesting museum, the Museo de la Ciudad, displaying pieces that tell about various parts of the state’s history and that of its capital city. It starts with the time the area was part of the Mayan chiefdom of Ah Kin Pech, of the lineage of the tick.

Exhibits also include Spanish weapons and armor from the 16th century, a replica of a ship’s figurehead, and a diorama of San Francisco de Campeche during the final years of the 19th century.

Be sure to visit the gallery featuring the influence of pirates in popular culture. In the display case are toys, handicrafts, sports uniforms, movies, and even lunchboxes inspired by these figures that have so captured the imagination for centuries.
