Campeche’s Boardwalk
Malecón de CampecheToday, the ocean continues to inspire Campeche’s people, who laid Adolfo Ruiz Cortines avenue out along the Gulf of Mexico coastline. Parallel to this street lies one of locals’ and visitors’ favorite walks, which, for its beauty and location, is also the perfect jumping off point for exploring Campeche’s Historic Center. Stretching over 3 miles, it is made up of three lanes: a bike path, a pedestrian walkway, and finally a running or jogging lane.
As if they were awaiting a surprise attack, a line of canons guards the promenade, their rusty metal mouths facing the ocean. While there may no longer be pirate ships on the horizon, these weapons, rescued from attacks and shipwrecks, come to life when the fiery evening light over the Campeche’s bay causes one to imagine naval battles behind the clouds.
