The Fort of San Miguel was built in the 18th century, driven by the fear of being attacked by pirates. Today it is considered a representative monument of the city’s military architecture. Up until the 20th century, it was used as the headquarters of the federal army; nowadays it is home to the Museo de la Cultura Maya (Museum of the Mayan Culture), a museum that exhibits archeological pieces from the Mayan culture, one of them being the fabulous Jade Mask of Calakmul.
