Cenote Classification and Types

The term “cenote” derives from the Mayan word “ts’ono’ot” or “d’zonot,” meaning a “cavern with a water deposit.” They are considered dissolution lakes or underground water deposits formed by water activity on soluble rock.

For the Maya civilization, cenotes, or “water holes,” were sacred sites to connect with deities. Today, they remain aquatic paradises for swimming, relaxing, cliff jumping, or diving into caverns and grottos.
