Ground was broken for this former prison in 1844. Under architect Carlos Suárez Fiallo, the project was built according to the panopticon style of prison architecture. This allows prison guards to see all the prisoners from a central tower without them knowing if they are being watched. Today, it is a center for the arts that promotes art production, dissemination, and research, in addition to exhibiting contemporary visual art.
